Six Days

Now that's a choke! Posted by Picasa

Less than a week until footie season begins - that's Australian Rules Football, a brutal mash-up of rugby (with no play stoppage), soccer (but lots more exciting) and American gridiron football (with no padding). I'm making this post in the hopes the My Girl Friday will provide me with occassional updates on the thunda from downunda. I'll try to throw in some commentary as well, if I can actually find an outlet that carries the matches. And I'll try to provide some extra insight on the Essendon Bombers.

Thanks YGF, much appreciated.

I went to the site and read the small blurb about MCG forcing the AFL to emulate the NFL and add some monday night games this season.

What going on with the MCG?

The G was where the Commonwealth Games athletics was, and of course the opening/closing ceremonies.

So it will take a few weeks for the stage and turf to be removed and the grass revamped. So for now, a lot of the Melboourne teams are playing at the Dome or travelling interstate. We get the G back on 25th April.

They have taken on a lot of the NFL rules, salary caps ect... and Monday night football is something that needs to be done, because the G usually hosts 2-3 matches per weekend. WIthout it, we can run out of venues!

I personally am looking forward to seeing how the Monday nights go. Could be the start of new era!

Monday Night football in America is a nice event - its gives a reason to go out and have a few beers on a night when normally, we wouldn't. And since its the only game on, a lot of people watch.

In America, from september to november, friday nights are reserved for the high school game, saturdays for college, sunday for the pros (and the one game on monday).

The dome, eh... I'll have to chekc that out.
